Do you need a permit to replace a roof in Maple Ridge?
Maple Ridge's pages and its new Building Bylaw 8097-2026 do not mention roofing at all. The Home Improvements page says a Home Improvement Building Permit is required to 'build, construct, remodel, repair', and the bylaw defines construction to include repair, so a homeowner should call Building Services (604-467-7311, BuildingEnquiries@MapleRidge.ca) before re-roofing.

What the rules say
Maple Ridge's roofing permit rules
Home Improvements page: 'A Home Improvement Building Permit is required to build, construct, remodel, repair...' Building page: 'A building permit is legally required to build, construct, remodel, repair' (examples: additions, detached structures, fire damage repairs, structural repairs, renovations, retaining walls). Building Bylaw No. 8097-2026 (adopted July 28, 2026): 5.1 'A permit is required prior to commencing any construction regulated by this Bylaw'; 4.2 excludes buildings 'exempted by Division A - Part 1 of the Building Code'; 'Construction' is defined to include 'any erection, addition, alteration, or repair to a building or structure'; 11.4 lets the Chief Building Official waive a permit requirement 'where it is not necessary'. The only listed exemption is sheds/accessory buildings not exceeding 10 m2 (10.6(e)).
Other local rules worth knowing
Permit Checklist - Home Improvement - Renovations and/or Repairs (rev. 2026-05-07) lists submission documents only. No roofing exemption exists in the bylaw text, so a conservative reading is that the City may ask for a permit for roof repairs; confirmation by phone is recommended.
